  34. 1. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  35. =====================================================================
  36. The Sony Ericsson PC Suite is designed to work with 
  37. Windows 2000 Professional SP3 or SP4, Windows XP Home SP1 and SP2, Windows XP Pro SP1 and SP2.
  38.  
  39. The general system requirements are:
  40.  
  41. At least 400 MB free hard disk space.
  42. Internet Explorer 5.0 or later has to be installed.
  43.  
  44. Windows 2000 with SP3 or SP4: 64 MB RAM, 266 MHz
  45. Windows XP Home with SP1 or SP2: 128 MB RAM, 300 MHz
  46. Windows XP Pro with SP1 or SP2: 128 MB RAM, 300 MHz
  47.  
  48. The Operating Systems Windows 2000, Windows XP Home and 
  49. Windows XP Pro will allow Installation while older Operating Systems,
  50. e.g. Windows 98, Windows ME and Windows NT are blocked. 
  51.  
  52. It is recommended that the PC SW is installed in the same language as 
  53. the Operating System otherwise trash characters in the applications 
  54. might be the result, especially for Asian languages.

  58. 2. SUPPORTED PERSONAL INFORMATION MANAGERS (PIMS)
  59. =====================================================================
  60. The Sony Ericsson PC Suite is designed to work with the following PIMs:

  71. 3. INSTALL/UNINSTALL
  72. =====================================================================
  73. It is recommended that all Windows applications have been closed 
  74. before the installation is started.
  75.  
  76. To repair a faulty installation launch the installation application
  77. from the CD or the web package. Choose "Repair" in the next dialog. 
  78. The original CD or web package is required to complete the repair.
  79. You can also perform a repair from Add/Remove programs in Control panel. 
  80. It is recommended to restart the computer before you do the repair.
  81.  
  82. To uninstall the software launch the installation application from
  83. the CD or the web package. Choose "Remove" in the next dialog. 
  84. The original CD or the web package is required to complete the uninstallation.  
  85. You can also perform an uninstallation from Add/Remove programs in Control panel.
  86. It is recommended to restart the computer before you do the uninstallation.

  88. To modify the installation launch the installation application from
  89. the CD or the web package. Choose "Modify" in the next dialog.

  93. If doing an installation over an earlier version of the PC Suite and a phone
  94. used together with the earlier PC Suite can not be found, please uninstall 
  95. the phone driver and install it again.

  98. Autorun function.

  104. 4. USB DRIVER SOFTWARE
  105. =====================================================================
  106. The CD contains driver software for DCU-11, DSS-20, DSS-25 and USB cable.
  107.  
  108. When the cable and phone are connected to the computer the Hardware
  109. Wizard will start. Follow the wizard and give the path to the drivers.

  144. 5. CONFIGURATION
  145. =====================================================================

  148. 5.1 SYNC SETTINGS
  149. =====================================================================
  150. Before the first synchronisation, you have to configure the sync 
  151. settings. You can choose which data types to sync: Contacts, 
  152. Calendar, Tasks and Notes.
  153.  
  154. It is only possible to change "Sync Manager Settings" while the phone
  155. is connected. If you try to change settings without the phone 
  156. connected, then "Sync Manager" will be greyed out.
  157.  
  158. Field matching between Personal Information Managers (PIM) and phone
  159. Several PIMs are supported on the computer. 
  160. We will use Microsoft Outlook 2003 as an example when 
  161. describing field matching between PIM and phone. The phone can only 
  162. support a limited amount of information, and in the list below we show 
  163. which fields that are supported. There is also a limitation on field 
  164. lengths in the phone, therefore long field names will be truncated
  165. when displayed in the phone.

  217. 5.2 HOW TO CONNECT SONY ERICSSON MOBILE PHONES FOR PC CONNECT OVER BLUETOOTH    
  218. ============================================================================
  219. Preconditions: Windows 2000 SP3 or SP4, Windows XP Home or Pro SP1 or SP2. 
  220. Sony Ericsson PC Suite installed.
  221.  
  222. Step 1:
  223. For external Bluetooth equipment, make sure that the equipment is installed 
  224. and connect the external Bluetooth equipment to the PC (please check 
  225. your PC and/or Bluetooth equipment manuals for details).
  226.  
  227. Activate Bluetooth communication on the phone (please check the phone manual
  228. for details).
  229.  
  230. Start the Bluetooth handling application on your PC (different for different
  231. vendors, please check your PC and/or Bluetooth equipment manuals for details).
  232.  
  233. Step 2:
  234. Search for available Bluetooth devices within range.
  235.  
  236. Step 3:
  237. Choose your phone among the devices found.

  243. Enter a passkey in PC (any key) when asked for it. Answer "Yes" to 
  244. the "Add to my devices" - question in phone.

  247. Enter the same passkey in phone when asked for it. Device should now be connected 
  248. to the PC software.

  251. Note! if you don't use Windows XP's built-in Bluetooth stack or don't have Widcomms 
  252. Bluetooth stack version 1.4.2.10 or later, you need to perform some additional steps. 
  253. These steps are described below.

  256. Search for available services for your phone (please check your PC and/or
  257. Bluetooth equipment manuals for details).

  260. Choose "Serial Port" connection and then select Connect.

  263. Information is given about what COM port the serial port connection will use,
  264. remember the COM port number.
  265. How to find information about the COM port differs between different Bluetooth equipment,
  266. please check your PC and/or Bluetooth equipment manuals for details.

  269. Go to the Start menu/Settings/Control Panel/Phone Monitor Options/COM ports.

  272. Mark the COM port you want to use (See Step 8), and set it to "enabled".

  278. 5.3 HOW TO CONNECT SONY ERICSSON MOBILE PHONES FOR PC CONNECT OVER SERIAL CABLE

  280. Preconditions: Windows 2000 sp3 or higher, Windows XPHome or Windows XPPro. 
  281. Sony Ericsson PC Suite installed.
  282.  
  283. Step 1:
  284. Connect your serial cable to one of your PC's physical COM ports and 
  285. then connect your Sony Ericsson mobile phone to the other end of the
  286. serial cable. Remember which COM port you attached the Serial cable to (in most
  287. cases it is COM 1 or COM 2)
  288.  
  289. Step 2:
  290. Go to Start menu/Settings/Control Panel/Phone Monitor Options/COM ports.
  291.  
  292. Step 3:
  293. Mark the COM port you want to use (See Step 1), and set it to "enabled".
  294.  
  295. Step 4:
  296. Press Apply and OK. Device should now be connected 
  297. to the PC software.

  300. 6 HOW TO INSTALL SONY ERICSSON MOBILE PHONE MODEMS
  301. =====================================================================
  302. This chapter will describe how to install different Sony Ericsson 
  303. mobile phone modems.
  304. If you like to use your Sony Ericsson Mobile Phone as a modem it is
  305. recommended that you install Sony Ericsson Bluetooth Modem.
  306.  
  307. =====================================================================
  308. 6.1 INSTALL SONY ERICSSON MOBILE PHONE BLUETOOTH MODEM
  309. =====================================================================
  310. Step 1:
  311. If not already done, follow Steps 1-5 in Chapter 5.2 to connect the 
  312. mobile phone for PC connect over Bluetooth.
  313.  
  314. Step 2:
  315. Search for available services for your phone (please check your PC 
  316. and/or Bluetooth equipment manuals for details).
  317.  
  318. Step 3:
  319. Choose "Dial-up Networking" and then select Connect.
  320.  
  321. Step 4:
  322. If a Connect dialog is displayed, click Cancel.
  323.  
  324. Step 5:
  325. Go to Start menu/Settings/Control Panel and then double click on
  326. "Phone and Modem Options"
  327.  
  328. Step 6:
  329. Click the Modem tab.
  330. Remember the COM port number used by the Bluetooth Modem.
  331.  
  332. Step 7:
  333. Click Add...
  334.  
  335. Step 8:
  336. Tick the "Don't detect my modem; I will select it from a list" 
  337. checkbox and click Next.
  338.  
  339. Step 9: 
  340. Select Manufacturer Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications and 
  341. then select the Sony Ericsson Bluetooth Modem that matches the 
  342. mobile phone model you wish to use. Click next.

  344. Step 10:
  345. Select the same COM port used by the Bluetooth Modem (See Step 6) and 
  346. then click Next. (The result will be that you have two Modems attached 
  347. to the same COM port. This is OK)
  348.  
  349. Step 11:
  350. Follow the modem wizard to the end.
  351.  
  352. Step 12:
  353. Click OK on the Phone and Modem Options dialog. Your modem should 
  354. now be successfully installed.

  357. 6.2.1 INSTALL SONY ERICSSON MOBILE PHONES REAL USB MODEM
  358. =====================================================================
  359.  
  360. When using Real USB, the USB modem installation is bundled within the 
  361. actual USB driver installation. This means that no additional modem 
  362. installation is necessary.
  363.  
  364. =============================================================================
  365. 6.2.2 INSTALL SONY ERICSSON MOBILE PHONES DCU-11, DSS-20 and DSS-25 USB MODEM
  366. =============================================================================
  367. You have to know which COM port is used for the USB modem. To do this, follow
  368. these steps.
  369.  
  370. Step 1:
  371. Install the USB cable by following Windows "Found new Hardware wizard" and 
  372. provide the appropriate drivers required.
  373.  
  374. Step 2:
  375. Go to Start menu/Settings/Control Panel/System. Click the "Hardware tab".
  376.  
  377. Step 3:
  378. Click the "Device Manager" button.
  379.  
  380. Step 4: 
  381. In the Device Manager list, expand the "Ports(COM & LPT)" category.
  382.  
  383. Step 5:
  384. In the expanded "Ports(COM & LPT)" list, you should find an entry similar to
  385. this one: "SEMC <type of USB cable used> (COM X).
  386. E.g. if you've installed a DSS-25 the entry might look like this:
  387. "SEMC DSS SyncStation (COM8)".
  388. Remember what COM port number is stated within the parenthesis, 
  389. because this is the number we're going to install the USB modem on.

  391. Once we have determined which COM port to use, it is time to proceed 
  392. with the actual USB modem installation. This is done in the subsequent 
  393. steps below.
  394. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  395. Step 6:
  396. Go to Go to Start menu/Settings/Control Panel and then double click on
  397. "Phone and Modem Options"
  398.  
  399. Step 7:
  400. Click the Modem tab.
  401.  
  402. Step 8:
  403. Click Add...

  405. Step 9:
  406. Tick the Don't detect my modem; I will select it from a list 
  407. checkbox and click Next.

  412. mobile phone model you wish to use. Click next.

  427. 6.2.3 INSTALL SONY ERICSSON MOBILE PHONES SERIAL MODEM

  429. Step 1:

  466. 6.3.1 INSTALL SONY ERICSSON MOBILE PHONES IrDA MODEM FOR WINDOWS 2000

  468. You need Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 or later.
  469.  
  470. The automatic installation of the infrared (IR) modem starts when you 
  471. place your Sony Ericsson Mobile Phone, with the infrared port enabled, 
  472. in front of your PC's infrared eye. Windows will find your device and 
  473. install the modem automatically. 
  474.

  476. 6.3.2 INSTALL SONY ERICSSON MOBILE PHONES IrDA MODEM FOR WINDOWS XP SERVICE PACK 1A
  477. ===================================================================================
  478. The automatic installation of the infrared (IR) modem starts when you 
  479. place your Sony Ericsson Mobile phone, with the infrared port enabled, 
  480. in front of your PC's infrared eye.

  483. 6.3.3 INSTALL SONY ERICSSON MOBILE PHONES IrDA MODEM FOR WINDOWS XP SERVICE PACK 2
  484. ==================================================================================
  485. A known issue on Windows XP service pack 2 is that the system wants to 
  486. install a "Standard modem over IR" instead of the correct IR modem. 
  487. However, it is the correct Sony Ericsson IrDA modem that is installed.
  488.  
  489. Step 1:
  490. Start the Installation of the Sony Ericsson IrDA modem by following 
  491. Windows "Found new Hardware wizard".
  492.  
  493. Step 2:
  494. The first step of the wizard asks you to install software for "Standard Modem over IR link". 
  495. Select the option "Install the software automatically".
  496.  
  497. Step 3:
  498. The correct Sony Ericsson IrDA modem is installed automatically. 
  499. Your modem should now be successfully installed.
  500.  
  501. =====================================================================
  502. 7. LIMITATIONS
  503. =====================================================================
  504. Synchronisation
  505.  
  506. If there is more data in the PIM than allowed in the phone, the
  507. synchronisation will complete successfully, but some items are not 
  508. synchronised to the phone. It is a good rule to check the 
  509. number of items in the phone from time to time to make sure that 
  510. there is enough space for new items to be synchronised.
  511.  
  512. Under "Sync Manager -> Settings -> Conflict policy" there
  513. is an option "Use the item last modified". This option is only applicable
  514. to data types Calendar and Tasks, for data types Contacts and Notes this
  515. option will actually result in "Keep item in the PC and overwrite item 
  516. in the device", since these data types does not support a last changed date.
  517.

  519. 8. KNOWN ISSUES February 10, 2006
  520. =====================================================================
  521. General
  522.  
  523. SYMPTOM: In some cases if using Mobile Networking Wizard and Bluetooth 
  524. the Sony Ericsson Bluetooth modem needs to be installed on the same com port
  525. as the default Bluetooth Modem.
  526. SOLUTION: Please follow instructions in 5.2 and 6.1 above.
  527.  
  528. SYMPTOM: Under certain conditions when trying to overinstall a newer 
  529. version over an older version of the PCSW problems may arise. 
  530. Problems finding the phone or running certain applications.
  531. SOLUTION: Run a REPAIR installation from the CD or Web intallation.
  532. It is also recommended to close ALL running applications and/or unistall 
  533. the older version of PCSW first. Please uninstall and reinstall the 
  534. phone cable drivers.
  535.  
  536. SYMPTOM: File Manager returns: "Unable to copy - an unexpected error has 
  537. occurred". Click "Try again". The message: "Unable to copy *** - the
  538. operation has been aborted".
  539. SOLUTION: The phone may not have enough free memory. There will be 
  540. memory full message on the phone. Free enough memory and download the 
  541. same file again.
  542.  
  543. SYMPTOM: Problem to download a MMS to the phone with the MMS Home Studio.
  544. "Receiving item" pops up on the device but vanishes pretty quickly.
  545. The MMS Home Studio returns "The file transfer was aborted". 
  546. Same problem might occur for Image Editor. In case of Image Editor 
  547. the error message is "Failed to transfer the image". 
  548. SOLUTION: The phone may not have enough free memory. There will be 
  549. memory full message on the phone. Free enough memory and download the 
  550. same file again.
  551.  
  552. SYMPTOM: File Manager does not display "Games" or "Applications" subfolders 
  553. SOLUTION: To add a .jar or "game" to the mobile. 
  554. 1.  Open File Manager 
  555. 2.  Connect mobile to PC via. Cable, Bluetooth or IrDA 
  556. 3.  In File Manager select "My <phone name>" (depending on phone model connected)
  557. 4.  Copy/Paste .jar or "game" over Phone Memory icon 
  558. RESULT: .jar or "game' can be saved in "Games" or "Applications" subfolder on mobile
  559.  
  560.  
  561. Outlook users
  562. SYMPTOM: Synchronisation is not possible after disconnecting the 
  563. computer from the network. 
  564. SOLUTION: Outlook must be restarted in "offline" mode.
  565.  
  566.  
  567. SYMPTOM: Updates are not transferred correctly.
  568. SOLUTION: Wait one minute and initiate another synchronisation.
  569.  
  570.  
  571. SYMPTOM: When an item has been changed in both PIM and phone in a short
  572. period of time and the slightly older version take precedence.
  573. SOLUTION: Repeat the change and initiate another synchronisation.
